Travel with purpose. Discover how culture, history, and identity shape societies and lives through experiences and adventures in Scandinavia, Africa, and the Caribbean.
Explore History, Culture and Identity
We do more than explore how people, cultures, and continents have been connected throughout history. We also examine questions that matter to us personally: Where do we come from? What traces of the past do we carry with us? What choices shape the path ahead?
Through travel, encounters, and new perspectives, we challenge old assumptions and gain the opportunity to see both the world and ourselves through new eyes.
This course is for those who are curious about people, culture, travel, and society.
Experience Ghana
In Ghana, we encounter a modern and vibrant African society, rich in history.
We walk through the bustling markets of Accra, visit local communities, meet young Ghanaians, and experience everyday life up close. We also explore some of the historic forts along the Gold Coast, which connect Ghana to Denmark-Norway and the Caribbean.
Highlights include:
- Accra and contemporary Ghanaian culture
- Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle
- Canopy Walkway
- Food, music, and dance
- Night walk in the rainforest
- Homestay with a local family
Experience the Virgin Islands
What does history look like on the other side of the Atlantic?
In the Virgin Islands, we encounter the legacy of the former Danish West Indies, while also experiencing a modern Caribbean society with its own culture, identity, and history.
We explore former plantations, colourful towns, and Caribbean beaches, while meeting people who call the islands home today.
Highlights include:
- Crystal-clear waters with temperatures around 27°C (81°F)
- Historic Danish-Norwegian colonial towns
- Crucian food culture and traditions
- Sailing, snorkeling, and white-sand beaches
- Night kayaking among bioluminescent organisms
- Encounters with local communities
Before we set out to explore the world, we begin in our own region.
We visit Merdø and start tracing a historical thread that stretches across continents: Fredensborg, the best-documented slave ship in the world, which sailed from Southern Norway in the 18th century. Through local excursions, we discover how our own region was connected to events that had far-reaching consequences on the other side of the Atlantic. These experiences provide the foundation and historical context for the journeys that follow.
History becomes more meaningful when we realize it did not only happen in distant places, but is also connected to our own story and heritage.
At the end of the year, you may also have the opportunity to complete the story, and join a trip to Copenhagen.
Here, you will see how colonial history is still present in the urban landscape through buildings, monuments, and sites connected to the trade routes between Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean. Exploring the city offers a deeper understanding of how the past continues to shape the present.
This trip is included in the trip, or you can pay additional cost and join trip to either England or Ecuador.
Group Trip to Denmark
At the beginning of the school year, the entire school travels to Rønbjerg Feriecenter in Denmark. On this trip, we get to know each other well and lay the foundation for a good and safe community that continues when we return to Sørlandet. A very nice start to the year!

International Trip Across Courses
Later, at the beginning of spring, the entire school goes on a trip at the same time, but to different destinations. You choose one of four options and travel with students from other courses. These trips are rich in content in their own way and offer impressions, human encounters, and experiences you will greatly enjoy! One of the trips is included in the school fee, so it doesn’t cost extra to join. The other trips cost extra.
Everyone chooses one of three options for the international trip across courses. These are arranged simultaneously. You make your choice after you have started at the school.
- Copenhagen, Denmark (included in the school fee).
- England (costs extra).
- Ecuador and Galápagos (costs extra).
If you want to go to England or Ecuador, you have to check if it is possible for you to get a visa. The trips will be arranged around March 2027.
More information about all the trips will be provided before you choose which trip you want to go on.

With us, you become part of a large, inclusive environment where everyone gets to know each other – of course, across different courses. That’s why we prioritize being together.

Trips
In Ghana, we encounter an Africa that is far more diverse and complex than the headlines suggest. Through our partnership with Adanu, we gain insight into how local communities work with education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development. We come not as aid workers, but as students eager to learn and understand.
St. Croix is a place where history feels close. This was where enslaved Africans were brought. It was here that Denmark-Norway built wealth through the sugar trade. We explore the traces of the Danish-Norwegian colonial era, meet the people who live on the island today, and discover how the past continues to shape society. We visit historic sites such as Fort Frederik, Christiansted, and Estate Whim, and meet local people who share insights into the island’s culture, identity, and history.
The entire school travels together to a holiday center in Denmark, providing numerous opportunities for activities and building friendships.
Experience the capital of Denmark! Stay centrally in the city center, with access to everything Copenhagen has to offer!
Join us on an eventful journey you won’t soon forget! We travel across England, from the port city of Liverpool to the capital, London.
